Kristen- always work on your craft

April 20, 2018

1. Tell us about yourself.

This reminds me of the ‘Introductions’ people ask of you when adding you on Facebook. Haha. But hello! My name is Kristen Alyssa Sylvanmani and I just turned 25. I’m a Chindian that speaks neither of my mother tongues and a Malaysian, through and through.

2. What is your childhood dream? Did you make it happen?

My childhood dream was to be a singer. In primary school, while my classmates did their homework or played with each other, I sat behind the class and memoried every one of Britney Spears songs. I sang in the shower and could sing along to every song on the radio like it was the telephone book. It’s still a dream that hasnt turned into reality… Yet. The other dream was to become an air-stewardess. This I was very close to achieving.

3. Describe how you first get into being a social media influencer/blogger? Is being a social media influencer/ blogger your full time job?

In all honestly, I started blogging when I was 13 going on 14. I used to write about more personal stuff – family, heartbreaks. And my blog was the platform I used to voice out my opinions or thoughts, other than my journal. Then when Instagram came about, I started letting people into my daily life on a more visual aspect. The books I read, the places I love to visit, my very aesthetic breakfast bowl, cafe hopping adventures etc. And no, I’m not a full time blogger/influencer. I don’t even consider myself that. I’m a full time law student.

4. Do you have other passion to pursue?

If there’s anything I’m passionate about, it would be writing. Apart from becoming a singer, I wanted to be a travel-blogger. I still do. And recently a few of my articles got published on Thought Catalog. Just search my name and you’ll find it. 🙂

5. What type of influencer/blogger would you describe yourself as?

I’d like to not categories myself into a specific category. I like doing a little bit of everything but if I must, I’d probably say a Lifestyle/travel blogger. Hands-down!

6. What does the word success mean to you?

It means achieving all your greatest desires and dreams. And most importantly looking back on all you’ve achieved and being happy at the end of the day.

7. What values are most important to you?

God first and family, above all else. This has been strummed into my very being since I was a child.

8. If you are given a million dollars, what would you do with that money?

I’d invest in property and watch that money multiply. I don’t come a family of much but if there’s anything I’d like to do with that money, it would be to bless my parents the way they have always blessed me with whatever they could manage.

9. What’s the most expensive thing you’ve bought in your life? and why?

When I moved into my own place recently, the most expensive thing I have ever had to pay was rent. And bills. The adulting life – they warned me it would feel this way.

10. What is your proudest achievement or accomplishment you have achieved in life?

Scoring myself an acceptance into the best airline in the world – Singapore Airlines.

11. Can you name some of your favourite bloggers/ influencers and why? Who would you love to collaborate with?

Ashley Sky, Jasmine Tookes, Olivia Culpo, Sheryl Ng, Wildlove (a very good friend), Noeline Annabelle. If I could collaboration with all of em, It would be a dream come true.

12. What would you say that is the biggest challenge about being a influencer?

I guess its the way you portray yourself. A little glitch and people are quick to assume and judge. Even when you stay true to yourself, there will be some that will say you’re faking it. Biggest challenge would probably be not letting all this negativity get to me and just do my own thing.

13. If you are given a chance to invent something, what would it be?

A little robot that can switch up into whatever I need – a ride, a butler, a friend.

14. If you have a magic ward, what is the one thing you would ask for and why?

To be financially stable and independent. Always. I guess in this economy, its not easy to stay afloat when it comes to savings and getting the job of your dreams, so that’s what I’d wish for.

15.  What is the one product/thing you can’t live without?

My ipod shuffle. I’ve had it for 5 years now and I use it when I run, when my phone gives up on me, when I travel. Everywhere.

16. What’s the best advice you have ever received?

I’ve always had a good support system and family members who’d always advice me in any situation so I have to too many good advices. But as of late, I guess it would be, “Always keep the faith. Hard times make you tougher and good times make you cherish every obstacle that took you to get there.”

17. What do you wish for by the time you hit the age of 30?

To settle down and be financially stable. To have a family. And I guess, to be truly happy. As cheesy as that sounds.

18. What do you think is the purpose of life?

To live life to its fullest – to do things that scare you, excite you and take you out of your comfort zone. To live a life you’re proud of, most of all. The kind of life where when you look back at it and reflect, you’d be thankful for your journey and be proud of all things you’ve accomplished.

19. if you had a chance to receive a gift, what would you wish for and why?

I’d wish for a superbike because I like the thrill of it and the adrenaline rush but to be more practical, I think I’d stick to receiving letters. It’s a beautiful thing when someone takes the times to pen their thoughts and dedicate a letter just for you. Genuinity at its finest.

20. What advice would you give to other aspiring influencers? any general advice to those that have big dreams?

To always work on your craft. To find something you love to do and always work on it. Try new things and explore but never forget your passions and what keeps you excited in the mornings. And lastly, to pay no mind to the opinions of others. Just DO YOU!
